July Market Recap & Starting with Why

July Market Recap

In July, stocks continued to rally. While US small caps led, large caps and international stocks also had attractive returns, while bonds were flat. For the calendar year, all four asset classes have made money. So far, it’s been a good year to invest, despite many negative news headlines.

Start With Why

Every summer, Whitcomb & Hess sponsors optional book clubs for employees. It’s a great opportunity to pause, reflect, and think about how we can do our jobs better and help clients more effectively. This summer, one of the books we’re reading is Start With Why by Simon Sinek. If you are interested in the premise, you can watch Sinek’s famous TED Talk here.

As advisors, it’s easy for us to start with questions like “what?” and “how?” We tend to talk about things like diversified portfolios, ETFs, mutual funds, stocks, bonds, rebalancing, and company fundamentals. But the biggest and most meaningful conversation we can have with you is always “why?”

Why Do You Invest?

Having money doesn’t matter much if you don’t know what it’s for.

This graphic represents the ongoing process of wealth management – how we continue to work with you to answer the WHY question. As you can see, it’s not a one-time conversation. We will keep having these Why conversations with you as your timeline, needs, or goals change.

When was the last time you thought about why you invest? Let’s talk more about it.
